There are positive indications that Springbok captain Siya Kolisi could be available for this Saturday’s Test against the All Blacks.
Earlier this week, after Kolisi sustained a suspected fractured cheekbone during the previous match against the All Blacks at Ellis Park, it was widely expected that he would likely miss this Saturday’s rematch. However, on Monday, it was confirmed that the Springboks’ team announcement had been delayed until Thursday, possibly to give Kolisi more time to recover.
Assistant coach Daan Human also mentioned that there was still a chance Kolisi could be available for selection for the upcoming Test. On Wednesday, positive signs emerged, with Kolisi participating in training sessions. However, his selection will ultimately depend on whether he was able to fully train on Monday, as Springbok policy requires players to participate in Monday training to be considered for matchday selection.
If Kolisi is not cleared to play, Marco van Staden is expected to return to the matchday 23, with Kwagga Smith also being a possible option at the No. 6 position.
Rassie Erasmus will announce the Springboks’ matchday squad for the Test on Thursday morning, with final preparations set to conclude on Friday during the team’s traditional captain’s run.
Newcomer Elrigh Louw expressed his excitement about the team dynamics, stating: “The competition in the squad is healthy, and I really believe we are building something special. I enjoy playing alongside Jasper (Wiese), and Pieter-Steph du Toit is an inspiration, showing a willingness to play any position and never giving up, which sets a great example for younger players.”
Louw also reflected on his personal highlight: “Facing New Zealand at Emirates Airline Park was a dream come true and the biggest rugby moment of my career so far, especially with how we came from behind to secure the win.”
Could Kolisi be available for this week’s crucial Test?
The Springboks are dealing with a growing injury list, as highlighted by Erasmus last week. Several key players are already unavailable, including Damian Willemse, Andre Esterhuizen, Franco Mostert, Faf de Klerk, and RG Snyman. Additionally, Kurt-Lee Arendse, who was knocked out cold at Ellis Park, will definitely miss this week’s match due to HIA protocols.
