The Springboks and their captain Siya Kolisi have been honored for their outstanding achievements in 2023 with nominations for the prestigious Laureus awards.
The Springboks are in contention for what could be their third Team of the Year award at the Laureus, having previously won following their Rugby World Cup victories in 2007 and 2019.
This year, they face competition from Manchester City, the Spain Women’s Football team, the European Ryder Cup golf team, the Red Bull Racing Formula 1 team, and the Germany Men’s Basketball team.
Kolisi, recognized for his remarkable return from a knee injury, is also among the nominees.
The Laureus Awards ceremony is set to take place in Madrid in April.
Mark Alexander, President of SA Rugby, expressed pride in the nominations received by the Springboks and Kolisi, highlighting the team’s significant achievements in France last year and their contribution to nation-building and social cohesion in South Africa.
He also commended Manchester City for their historic Champions League victory, Spain for their win at the FIFA Women’s World Cup, the European team for their Ryder Cup golf comeback, Red Bull Racing for dominating Formula 1, and Germany for their unexpected success in the basketball World Cup.
Alexander specifically praised Kolisi for his determination and hard work in recovering in time for the World Cup, underscoring the inspirational aspect of his journey and leadership in lifting the trophy for the second consecutive time.
The Springboks and Kolisi are looking forward to the awards ceremony, with high hopes for recognition at the prestigious event.
