A brace from Mogakolodi Ngele helped Platinum Stars to a well deserved 3-0 win over SuperSport United in an Absa Premiership encounter played at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium in Rustenburg on Sunday afternoon.
Henrico Botes opened the scoring for Dikwena, subsequently extending his goal scoring record at the club.
Allan Freese made no fewer than four changes to the side that lost 2-0 to Moroka Swallows. Tintswalo Tshabalala, Issa Sarr, Mogakolodi Ngele and Siphelele Mthembu were all included in the starting 11.
Cavin Johnson, on the other hand, only made two changes to the team that drew 1-1 with Bloemfontein Celtic. Mogogi Gabonamong replaced George Maluleka while Sibusiso Zuma made his first appearance for the club since returning from injury.
Dikwena started the brighter of the two sides with Vuyo Mere’s deflected free-kick attempt going just wide of Ronwen Williams right hand post in the opening few minutes.
Matsatsantsa though were also looking dangerous especially down the wings and Sameehg Doutie probably should’ve done better from close range in the 9th minute.
Fellow winger Thuso Phala who faced his former side for the first time played in Doutie but he was unable to direct his attempt past Siyabonga Mpontshane.
Tintswalo Tshabalala forced a good save out of Williams eight minutes later. The midfielder found himself in a pocket of space before firing at goal, the United shot stopper though was up to the task with his captain Bevan Fransman doing well to clear the loose ball with Mthembu lurking.
David Mathebula should’ve given Matsatsantsa the lead in the 26th minute. Zuma picked out an unmarked Mathebula inside the area, but the former Dube Birds midfielder could only manage to direct his resulting header over the crossbar from close range.
Platinum Stars striker Henrico Botes opened the scoring in the 35th minute of the encounter, seven minutes after coming on for the injured Mthembu.
The Namibian took down a long ball brilliantly before striking past an out of position Rowen Williams from outside the area, the goal was the lanky forwards 29th for Dikwena, a new club record.
Robert Ng’ambi went close to doubling the hosts advantage on the stroke of halftime, the Malawian just failed to connect to a ball across the face of goal with Williams stranded.
Stars were good value for their lead at the break with SuperSport probably a tad fortunate not to have been two down heading into the tunnel.
Bradley Grobler replaced Zuma after the interval and nearly found the back of the net two minutes into the second stanza.
Phala’s ball found an unmarked Grobler at the far post, the striker tried to step past Mpontshane, but the shot stopper wasn’t prepared to be beaten and denied Grobler with his trailing leg.
Mogakolodi Ngele doubled the hosts lead in the 50th minute of the encounter.
Ng’ambi found Ngele who in turn directed a shot at goal from an acute angle, his effort beat Williams before nestling into the back of the net via the inside of the post.
Ngele completed his brace 15 minutes later. The Botswana international picked up the ball from Ng’ambi before making a snipping run through the Matsatsanta defence and placing the ball past Williams, 3-0.
Stars were playing with swagger and Ngele had an opportunity to bag a hat-trick three minutes later but he was denied impressively by Williams.
The North West outfit continued to dominate proceedings, seeing the game out with real confidence.
It was an unhappy return for Cavin Johnson and his SuperSport United outfit, who slumped to second spot on the log following the loss.
The win for Platinum Stars move them up to fourth place on the Absa Premiership standings.
