Sundowns add to Leopards' relegation blues

BLACK Leopards’ relegation woes were intensified when they were hammered 5-2 by Mamelodi Sundowns at the Peter Mokaba Stadium on Tuesday night in an Absa Premiership clash.

Elias Pelembe grabbed a brace with Teko Modise, Hlompho Kekana and Nyasha Mushekwi each scoring a goal for the Brazilians on the night.

Leopards captain Mongezi Bobe and Samuel Mabunda were the players that netted the consolation goals for Lidoda Duvha.

It only took Sundowns five minutes to put the relegation threatened Limpopo side under the sword when playmaker Pelembe’s through ball to Modise was put away by the former Bafana Bafana midfielder when he just chipped it over Leopards keeper Posnet Omony.

Pelembe made it 2-0 just inside the first ten minutes when Kekana cut open Leopards’ defence with a fantastic pass which the Mozambican was on the receiving end of, and coolly slotted the ball beyond Omony.

In the 25th minute Sundowns should have grabbed the third goal to effectively seal the match. Right-back Ramahlwe Mphahlele sent in a cross from the right flank but from six-yards out Mushekwi could only see his headed effort saved.

But the Brazilians were not to be denied their third. Kekana cracked a belter of a shot from a 35-yard free kick that flew into the back of the net beyond an outstretched Omony.

Leopards pulled a goal back with seven minutes remaining in the first half when Raymond Monama’s cross from a dead ball situation found Bobe at the back post who headed past Sundowns keeper Wayne Sandilands.

Five minutes into the second half Sundowns got their fourth goal of the match when Richard Henyekane attempted a shot that was spilled by Omony and Mushekwi was on hand to poke it home to make it 4-1.

In the 65th minute Mabunda pulled a goal back for Leopards when he let rip a cracker shot from long range.

Six minutes later Pelembe restored Sundowns’ three goal advantage when he dribbled past three Leopards defenders on the left side and then scored from close range to make it 5-2.
