BIDVEST Wits went down 1-0 to table-topping SuperSport United in an Absa Premiership game played at a windy Bidvest Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The first half was a case of the two sides cancelling each other out as both sets of defenders enjoyed the upper-hand over the attacking players, with a result that there was little excitement in and around the box.
Indeed there was only one shot from each team on target, and while Wits enjoyed slightly more possession, they were unable to cause too much trouble for Morgan Gould, Mario Booysen and co.
it was centre back Booysen who had the first chance of the game, but his header from a free kick out wide in the 12th minute flew across the face of the goal.
Wits had some good moments in the SuperSport box, but could not capitalise on these opportunities.
United keeper Ronwen Williams did well to deal with an awkward cross from Lehlolongolo Masalesa in the 27th minute and then 10 minutes later Nyiko Tshabangu got his timing wrong when picked out at the back post by Bongo Jawiya’s cross.
It took all of 17 minutes for the first real threat on goal to arrive after the restart, but Gould could not make the most of his chance, heading wide from a free kick.
Matsatsantsa suffered a setback in the 63rd minute when Gabonamong’s afternoon ended prematurely after he picked up a second yellow card.
Both coaches rung the changes, but still chances remained at a premium as the defenders continued to win the day.
But finally the breakthrough came in the 83rd minute, involving two SuperSport substitutes as Jabu Maluleke smoothly brought down a long ball and played a lovely threaded ball through to Kernit Erasmus, who finished with a great angled shot into the far corner.
The Clever Boys tried to hit back with an 87th minute equaliser when Sandile Sibande pulled the trigger from 30-yards out, but Williams made an acrobatic diving save to ensure the three points for the Tshwane team.
