Swallows climb to second

MOROKA Swallows scored twice in the last 12 minutes to secure a 3-1 win over Bidvest Wits in an Absa Premiership match at the Bidvest Stadium yesterday.

First half goals from Ryan Chapman and Siyabonga Nomvethe had left the game seemingly headed for a tame 1-1 draw, but a second for Nomvethe added to a fine strike on the counter attack by Mpho Maleka saw the Birds to a fourth win in their last five matches.

Wits took the lead in just the third minute of the match, with Ryan Chapman capitalising on a loose ball before unleashing a fantastic left-footed effort that nestled in the top corner of the net.

From that point on the teams effectively cancelled each other out, and there were few further scoring chances in the remainder of the first half.

For the most part the attackers were restricted to long range efforts, the best of which was a fierce drive from Sifiso Myeni that went straight into the arms of Greg Etafia in the 24th minute.

MacBeth Sibaya also got away a well-struck volley after some slick build-up play by the visitors, but Energy Murambadoro made a comfortable save.

With half time approaching Swallows levelled the game at 1-1 when Siyabonga Nomvethe took advantage of some uncertainty between Mbulelo Mabizela and Murambadoro to sneak in and score from close range.

Clearly buoyed by their goal just before the break, the Birds started the second half on the front foot. However, the home team soon reasserted themselves in the game and began to threaten a second goal, particularly when they used their flanks to good effect.

Yet Swallows surged ahead – against the run of play – on 78 minutes when Nomvethe scored a fine solo goal, gliding beyond Derrick Spencer with his pace before beating Murambadoro at his near post with a crisp finish.

The Clever Boys had an immediate opportunity to equalise, as they were gifted a soft penalty. However, substitute Stanton Fredericks saw his casually-taken spot kick saved by Etafia – the man who had been harshly penalised for a supposed foul on Sibusiso Vilakazi.

The Birds then killed off the game in the 81st minute, cutting Wits apart on the counter attack before Mpho Maleka coolly finished off the chance to make it 3-1 and secure a fine away win for the Soweto side.
