Thanks, But No Thanks: Springbok Declines Selection in Rassie’s Team!

Why a Two-Time World Cup Winner Declined Selection in the Springboks’ Starting Lineup

Discover the remarkable story behind why a prominent two-time World Cup winner declined his inclusion in the Springboks’ starting lineup for this weekend’s Test match.

Earlier this week, Rassie Erasmus had to make an unexpected change to his starting XV after a veteran Springbok selflessly turned down the opportunity to start in Saturday’s Test against Wales.

The Springboks faced Wales in the annual Qatar Cup showdown at Twickenham in London on Saturday, where they secured a decisive 41-13 victory, retaining the title they won against the All Blacks last year.

However, the buildup to the game was marked by an extraordinary act of selflessness from Frans Malherbe. Initially, Erasmus had announced Malherbe as the starting tighthead prop, with Vincent Koch slated to come off the bench.

Unbeknownst to the Springbok management, the match against Wales would be the 34-year-old Koch’s 50th Test. Recognizing the significance of this milestone, Malherbe requested to swap roles, allowing Koch to start in his landmark match.

Koch, a key member of the Springboks’ famed Bomb Squad, had played 37 of his previous 49 Tests as a substitute and made only 12 starts before this weekend’s match.

ERASMUS REVEALS FRANS MALHERBE’S SELFLESS GESTURE

“We announced the team with Frans at tighthead,” said the Springbok coach. “Five minutes later, one of the players told me it was Vincent’s 50th game.

“When Franna heard that, he said, ‘No way’. A guy that works so hard and got so few chances to start deserves this moment. He plays with familiar teammates like Malcolm Marx, so the combination works well.”

SELFLESS ACTS COMMON IN THE SPRINGBOK CAMP

Erasmus shared that this wasn’t the first time such an act of selflessness occurred. “We’ve made this mistake twice before,” he admitted.

“We selected Lood de Jager, but someone whispered that it was Franco Mostert’s 50th game. I thought, ‘My goodness, he’s going to play off the bench’. I told Lood, and he said he didn’t mind.

“But when we got to the huddle, Lood announced it was Franco’s 50th game and said Franco should start instead. Lood’s willingness to step aside for his teammate was heartwarming.”
