THE title race in the Absa Premiership continued last night with all the clubs in the top four registering some positive results.
At Orlando Stadium, Orlando Pirates cemented their top position on the log with a 2-0 victory over rookies, Vasco da Gama with goals scored by Katlego Mashego and Thulasizwe Mbuyane.
The mighty Buccaneers are now topping the log with 38 points, and they are two points clear from their Soweto rivals and second placed Kaizer Chiefs (36 points) who also registered a convincing 2-1 away victory to Golden Arrows at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban. Sthembiso Ngcobo scored a brace with Collins “Ntofontofo” Mbesuma scoring a consolation goal for the home side.
In Nelspruit’s Mbombela Stadium, Mpumalanga, Mamelodi Sundowns rose from their sleeping comfort zone to register their first win after three winless matches. This after they beat the troubled Moroka Swallows 2-0 with Nyasha Mushekwi scoring his sixth goal of the season while Method Mwanjali sealed the Brazilians’ victory that saw them moved one position up to third with 35 points.
Sundowns who were at some stage on top of the log with clear a seven points gap from fellow title chasers have themselves to blame for dropping points that saw them collect eight points out of the possible 18 since the 2011 football calendar started on January 7. This after they won two matches, drawn two and lost two, however last night’s victory over Swallows has brought them closer to Pirates who are three points clear of them.
In Bloemfontein, Ajax Cape Town dropped two valuable points when they played to a dull goalless draw against Bloemfontein Celtic. The results saw the Urban Warriors dropping to the fourth position with 34 points, and they are five points clear of their neighbours, Santos who are fifth with 29 points after they played to a 3-3 draw at home against Free State Stars in a six goals thriller at the Athlone Stadium.
The rest of last night’s Absa Premiership results are: Maritzburg United 1 v AmaZulu 1, Platinum Stars 3 v Mpumalanga Black Aces 1 and SuperSport United 1 v BidVest Wits 2.
