When you step into any Audi, it is a very special occasion. Right from the little A1 compact car, to the glorious and large flagship A8 saloon, you know that Audi are masters in the craft of car creation.
There is quality oozing from every switch, care in every stitch and an excellent feeling of strength. It feels as though it is going to last for many, many years to come – it simply feels unbreakable.
In recent years the Audi has moved up in the range. First, it was an entry-point and now that place has been taken by the A1. The A3 competes in the premium large hatchback segment, shared by the Volkswagen Golf, BMW 1-Series, Alfa Romeo Giulieta and Mercedes-Benz A-Class.
Enter the third generation Audi A3 and it is business as usual. The new model excels on all levels and delivers on the promise of Vorsprung Durch Technik which means “advancement through technology”
In terms of the design, the new A3 is not radical and drastic when compared to its predecessor. There is a subtle progression and advancement here, it is much sharper to look at and more purposeful.
Inside, a clearer and less cluttered layout features. Everything is centered towards the driver and characteristics like the circular 3D air-vents have been borrowed from the trendy and cool Audi A1.
A variety of petrol and diesel engines are on offer. The 1.4 TFSI uses a turbocharger and kicks out 90kW. The more powerful 1.8 TFSI kicks out 132kW and it promises to rocket from 0 to 100km/h in just 7.2 seconds. And the efficiency of these engines is remarkable: Audi claims between 5.2 and 6.6l/100km.
In the diesel range, Audi offers an entry-level variant in the form of the 1.6 TDI which has an output of 77kW and a claimed consumption figure of 3.9l/100km. Features like a stop-start system and energy recuperation technology help reduce fuel consumption even further.
Prices start off at a very reasonable R267 000 for the Audi A3 1.2T FSI manual model. The 1.6 TDI comes in at R302 500. Also at the higher end of the scale is he 90kW S-Tronic model which goes for R291 500.
With its premium character, good looks and superb build quality, we do not think that Audi will struggle to find buyers for its latest model.
