The Springboks secured a solid victory over Wales, and three players significantly bolstered their cases for continued selection.
The Springboks kicked off the season with a comfortable win over Wales, as anticipated, but the real test lies ahead with a first-choice squad set to face Ireland in July.
Nonetheless, the Wales Test served an essential purpose, providing some newcomers with valuable Test experience, and a few players notably seized the opportunity.
WHO WERE THE SPRINGBOKS’ BIG WINNERS FROM SATURDAY?
Edwill van der Merwe
With Cheslin Kolbe and Kurt-Lee Arendse absent, Van der Merwe had a chance to shine, and he took full advantage. The Lions speedster beat four defenders, made two clean breaks, ran 71 meters, and completed all three of his tackle attempts, earning the Man of the Match award. His performance, highlighted by a brilliant solo try, solidified his claim for a continued role as the season progresses.
Aphelele Fassi
As Willie le Roux’s career winds down, the Springboks need to build depth at fullback. Fassi’s performance on Saturday was a significant win in this regard. Making his first start since 2022, Fassi continued his impressive form from the Sharks, earning him a recall to the Springbok side. He was excellent under the high ball, added a spark on attack, and was nearly flawless throughout the game. With Damian Willemse out for an extended period due to injury, Fassi’s timely performance couldn’t have been better.
Evan Roos
With Jasper Wiese suspended, the Springboks needed to explore other options at No. 8, and Roos was the first to get a key opportunity on Saturday. In what was effectively an audition for the role, he delivered a powerful performance. Roos made 78 meters, beat three defenders, completed 13 carries, and made four tackles, showcasing his potential to step up for the remainder of the season.
THUMBS UP FROM THE COACH
Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus described the 41-13 victory as a “goal achieved” to start their 2024 season.
“It wasn’t a perfect performance,” said Erasmus. “We made a few errors and there were things that didn’t click, but there were others that did, so it was a good start. We have new coaches and had a few players making their debuts, so there were areas of the game that were not as good as we would have liked, but there was certainly no lack of effort and intensity, and we realize it will take time for things to come together nicely. The important thing is that we achieved our goal, and the players who made their debuts showed that they are capable of playing at this level.”
