Two Springboks Suffer Broken Legs; One’s Season Potentially Over

Two of the Springboks’ star forwards suffered broken legs in Saturday’s grueling second Test against Ireland in Durban.

Franco Mostert and Malcolm Marx both sustained severe injuries during the Springboks’ 25-24 defeat to Ireland at Kings Park Stadium this past Saturday.

Earlier today, Rassie Erasmus confirmed that the Springboks will be without the services of Mostert, Pieter-Steph du Toit, Franco Mostert, and Cheslin Kolbe for their Rugby Championship opener against the Wallabies on 10 August.

Du Toit and Kolbe are dealing with unspecified injury niggles. Mostert, however, has been ruled out of action for six weeks due to a broken leg he suffered in the first quarter of the game against Ireland.

Erasmus also mentioned that Marx is nursing an injury following a horrendous croc roll on him by Ireland captain Caelan Doris. It has now come to light that the Springbok hooker has broken his leg as well.

Because it’s the same leg that sidelined him for nine months (from October 2023 to July 2024), Marx is facing another extended spell on the sidelines.

“Franco is out for six weeks; he broke his leg,” Erasmus said. “Malcolm, I just heard now, he’s got a little bit of a tibia fracture from the injury.”

The first Rugby Championship showdown of the year between the Springboks and Wallabies will take place at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane on Saturday, 10 August, followed by the second clash between the sides a week later in Perth.
