MTN South Africa and the Premier Soccer League (PSL) today launched the MTN8 Wafa Wafa tournament for the 2011/12 season. The top eight teams from last season commence the battle to claim the R8 million – winner takes all prize – on the weekend of 5 August 2011.
The teams that have qualified for the MTN8 finished the 2010/2011 season in the following order: Orlando Pirates, Ajax Cape Town, Kaizer Chiefs, Mamelodi Sundowns, Bloemfontein Celtic, Bidvest Wits, SuperSport United and Santos.
And if anyone thought they had seen it all during the last three seasons of the MTN8, this time teams and fans are sure to be blown away by the unbelievable experience MTN has put together.
In an interesting move, this year’s MTN Last Fan Standing competition carries a staggering R8 million in prizes especially for the fans.
“The MTN8 Tournament sets the scene for the 2011/2012 season,” said acting PSL CEO, Professor Ronnie Schloss.
“It continues to grow and with record crowds in attendance during last season’s campaign, we hope that we can exceed these numbers in 2011 and make it a truly spectacular tournament.”
For the duration of the tournament, every eight hours, there will be daily winners of airtime (R8000), home entertainment sets, IPhones and many other spot prizes every day.
Serame Taukobong, MTN SA Chief Marketing Officer says: “MTN is excited about getting the 2011/2012 edition of the MTN8 underway at the beginning of August. This year we have pulled out all the stops, to bring not only the teams and the football fans amazing prizes, but opened up the MTN8 Wafa Wafa experience to all our loyal customers – so that everyone can be part of this legendary tournament. R8 million for the winning team and R8 million in prizes for the fans – now that’s more Ayoba for you. It promises to be yet another fast and exciting season opener.”
The most Ayoba Last Fan Standing Competition for Fans
This season, MTN8 fans can look forward to yet another exciting Last Fan Standing (LFS) competition, after a successful competition held for the past two seasons, during which Thulani Ngcobo won a 38-match FIFA World Cup prize and last year’s winner, Malose Kutumela won an eight-day all expenses paid trip, to watch Manchester United in Europe over eight days.
This year’s MTN Last Fan Standing will win a prize worth a whopping R2 million, which includes a trip of a lifetime to watch eight top derbies in the world and R1 million in cash. To stand a chance to win, fans will have to opt-in when they receive an SMS from MTN about the competition by dialing *186*8# and then recharging with a minimum of R10 airtime. By doing so, fans will be automatically entered into a weekly draw to be selected as two of the weekly finalists, selected between 15 August to 5 September. Furthermore, the two weekly finalists drawn over the four week period, will each win R80 000 in cash.
Each of the eight finalists will then go into the final round during the week leading up to the MTN8 Final, to stand a chance of becoming the ultimate Last Fan Standing winner, walking away with the R2 million prize. The competition will run from 15 August until 5 September with the ultimate Last Fan Standing announced on the day of the MTN8 Final on 10 September.
MTN8 Wafa Wafa Women’s Month competition
In support of Women’s Month (August), the MTN8 Wafa Wafa tournament will reward female fans that come to the stadium dressed in fan regalia. Female fans that come clad to impress will stand a chance to win an R8000 prize that is shared. In the spirit of Women’s Month, the female fan will receive R4000 in cash for herself and will donate the remaining R4000 to a charity of her choice that seeks to help women or children. At each game, the best-dressed female fan will be selected from the stands and will be announced at half time after being selected by a renowned women’s personality at each game.
Football gives to charity
In continuing the charity initiatives linked to the tournament, MTN remains determined that football leaves a legacy amongst the communities in which it operates. The eight participating clubs will each adopt a charity of their choice, that will aim to become the “last charity standing” along with their team’s aim of becoming the “last man standing”.
As teams get knocked out of the tournament, their charities are also eliminated but will receive R8000 towards the selected charity. The winning team’s charity will receive R80 000.
MTN8 Golden ticket
Prior the launch of MTN8, MTN ran a direct marketing competition with their existing post-paid customer base. Customers who have been on the MTN network for at least 6 months or more opted in to enter the competition and stood a chance to win a Golden Ticket to see all the MTN8 games including the final. Subsequently, four winners have been selected and MTN looks forward to hosting them during the nine-match soccer spectacle.
