Where Is Proteas Legend Herschelle Gibbs Now?

Herschelle Gibbs captivated Proteas and IPL fans with his remarkable and instinctive shot-making. So, where is the talented former batsman now?

HERSCHELLE GIBBS HAD ALMOST TOO MUCH TALENT

Gibbs was one of those rare athletes who excelled in multiple sports. At Bishops in Cape Town, he was the first rugby team’s flyhalf and still holds the record for the fastest 100m sprint time at the school. There were even rumors that Arsenal and Tottenham, two major North London football clubs, invited Gibbs for trials.

THE 438 GAME

In a match that remains unforgettable for South African cricket fans, Gibbs scored 175 runs off 111 balls. This aggressive batting display helped the Proteas win by one wicket with just one ball remaining. Gibbs’ innings on March 12, 2006, in Johannesburg, is still a landmark in ODI cricket history.

WORLD CUP PERFORMANCES

Gibbs scored 143 runs against New Zealand in the 2003 World Cup when South Africa hosted the tournament. Unfortunately, despite his efforts, the Proteas didn’t win the trophy, with rain and the Duckworth-Lewis method playing against them.

IPL CHAMPION

In 2009, Gibbs became an IPL Champion with the Deccan Chargers. The T20 format suited him perfectly, not just for his powerful hitting but also for his fielding skills. He was known for his agility and knack for runouts. Gibbs made history by hitting six consecutive sixes in one over against the Netherlands in the 2007 Cricket World Cup.

IMPRESSIVE STATS DESPITE HIS RISK-TAKING APPROACH

Gibbs’ approach to batting was always risky, yet his overall stats remained impressive.
