The Indian Premier League (IPL) is arguably the biggest T20 tournament of the world that sees the world’s leading cricketers compete against each other. Each franchise team consists of players from different nationalities. At the end of the tournament, there are two team awards that are declared. The first is the champion of the event and the second is a fair play award.
A fair play award is won by the team that played the entire tournament in spirit of the game. The criteria to decide the winner of the fair play award is based on a point system.
In each match, teams are scored out of ten points for their fair play. The ones who give the score are the two on-field umpires and the third umpire. The ten points are a culmination of four criteria. Four of the ten points are for checking whether each team has played within the laws and regulations of the tournament. The three other criteria are worth two points each. They are based on respect towards the opposition, laws of cricket, and the umpires.
A mean score of two per criteria is usually a good sign. Any score below that is average or poor. When the tournament ends the total score for each team is calculated to decide the winner.
Since its inception in 2008, Chennai Super Kings leads the count with six fair play awards. However, it is notable to mention that the team hasn’t won that award since 2015. Rajasthan Royals and Sunrisers Hyderabad are the next best sides with three fair play awards each. In addition to the award of the fair play award, the team also wins 10 lakh rupees.
