Bidvest Wits have done what many might label “the impossible” when they beat log leaders Mamelodi Sundowns before a huge crowd at Mbombela Stadium on Sunday, November 14.
The “Students”, as Wits are popularly known, travelled to the Mpumalanga capital to revive the ties they forged there in 2008, when they played a few matches at the Kanyamazane Stadium.
The return of the Clever Boys was met with a resounding welcome by 18 000 fans. Wits were duly carried by this vociferous support and went on to beat log-leaders Sundowns 1-0. The goal was an own goal scored by James Mayinga.
This victory took Wits to the fourth spot in the Absa Premiership. For Downs it meant their lead at the top, 16 points, was narrowed to one point by Kaizer Chiefs, who beat Orlando Pirates 3-1 to move up.
Wits on the other hand moved one notch to fourth. Their keeper Darren Keet was the hero on the day, keeping Downs attackers at bay and also stopping a penalty by Elias “Domingues” Pelembe in the 68th minute.
The man of the match award however went to local boy Sandile Sibande, who was inspired by playing in front of his hometown crowd for the first time at this level.
Wits focus is now on Ajax, whom they meet in a league game in Cape Town on Friday, November 26. Kickoff at the Newlands Stadium is 8pm. There they will be hoping to extend their domination and hopefully steal the three points.
